Finding an Internship

What have been your experiences so far with finding an internship. If you found one, what helped you with your success. If you are still looking, what has been your biggest challenge? Can you provide any suggestions to the class?

I got lucky and won a scholarship that included an internship. If you are still looking I would check the www.AAF.org job bank. I also found that a lot of companies list open jobs including internship on their websites.

I think this AAF.org site is really a resourceful site for us not only now, but in the future as well. It provided very updated and specific job post that is located in different states. Also, it provides internship opportunities during the summer. Great site! Thanks for sharing!

I finally secured an internship yesterday after a stressful several weeks of searching. I did research on the companies before I went in for the interviews so that I knew what they were looking for. I think this helped a lot because I was prepared with intelligent questions that removed any awkward silences.
Another good idea is to bring a CD of your portfolio for them to keep so that they can look back at it if they need to refresh their memory after the interview.

I had an internship for a year and a half way before I got to portfolio
but because of staffing issues they had to let me go. I kept my doors open with my ex boss, we would exchange emails every once in a while about my school work and grades.

This made it very easy for me to contact her this summer and ask her if I could come back for the fall.

the best advice I can give is network, network, network! and don't burn any bridges, you never know if you might need to cross them again.

Awesome idea on taking a CD for their own reference, brilliant!

Also, it's good that you did your research so you knew what you were talking about. Awkward silences at interviews is something that can really rob you from the job, so be informed people!

Hello everyone! I got my internship about 4 months ago and I did it back home during the break. I worked full-time for a month and I also think as Jessica does that one of the best ways is network. I exchanged emails with my boss and I sent her school work and I did a kind of pdf. portfolio which she liked a lot. I had an awesome time during my internship because they gave me all kinds of work. I learned so much I can not even tell you guys! I still write to her to keep in touch, all of the staff was also very nice they even plan a fare-well party for me with gifts and cards.
I think it is very important to get along with everyone not only your bosses. I hope you all have the same experience I had!!! Good Luck!!

Lilly congratulations on your internship, I know you are going to do a great job as usual!!! Where did you get it?

I think it's awesome you had such a good experience during your internship... I hope I can say the same in a few months. I'm already so nervous as to how the semester is going to be.

As far as finding one myself, no luck yet-but I did just finish my resume and begin sending it out today,... so wish me luck! PLEASE.

Good luck shauna!

Olga, thank you! I got an internship with New Balance and I'm very excited about it. It's great to hear how much you learned during yours. I'm sure everyone would like to see some of the work you did.

Nikki, did you call New Balance yet? I called MeLissa and left a message and they got back to me the next day. You might just need to remind them that you're waiting. : )

I am currently looking for an internship. I have sent my resume to WCVB-TV and with a follow up phone call they said they were “very anxious to have an intern” and that they would be contacting me shortly. I am planning on calling them again on Tuesday or Wednesday and at the same time I am sending my resume to Mullen and Channel 7 News.

Lilly the CD is an awesome idea I am putting my together right now. I also agree with you on doing your research before walking into an awkward silence, props to you!

I was stressed and worried so I went to talked to Amanda this afternoon about the New Balance internship position because I haven't heard back from NB since the interview 2 weeks ago. Thanks Amanda, within an hour, the HR person from NB called me and said that I got the job!! Yeah!!
So, Nikki, you should definitely contact New Balance and at them same time talk to Amanda about your situation.

Wish you good luck!

My experience with an internship went very smoothly due to being persistent and jumping at a great opportunity. I did an internship last summer for my uncle's company called Vertical Tables (www.verticaltables.com). He offered the internship and I jumped right on it. He is a very driven intimidating guy, but showing that I was eager to start interning immediately showed him I was ready to learn. I would suggest exhausting all resources you have in your social network. Find a family member, friends parents, anyone who works in the field, and chances are they will be willing to help you.

Preparing a resume, writing cover letters, researching companies and compiling samples of my work was very overwhelming in the beginning stage of my search for an internship. I received a call from Transmyt marketing days after applying online and the next day had an interview lined up. The interview went smoothly and I was offered the position that same day.

I would suggest calling the companies/firms in regards to a position anywhere. People forget to respond or can over look a perfect applicant easily. Calling shows initiative and gives you the opportunity to speak directly to the employer.

Lilly,

Awesome idea with the CD to leave behind. I also have a website with some of my work up. It's come in handy a few times to show my work during an interview.

I have found the hard way through bad free-lancing that burning bridges is the worst. It is always best to be completely honest and sincere in your business relations. Because it's true you never know when you might need to cross that bridge again...

I agree with Olga on her comment regarding your rapport with co-workers, bosses and anyone else in your work environment. Maintaining a positive attitude can only benefit you professionally, and you might even make some friends!

I started out last week behind the eight ball and intimidated by what was looming in the upcoming semester. Motivated by the two week deadline (and fear!) and help from Amanda I secured an internship at Transmyt Marketing. I had my first day today and was able to work on two different projects, one of which already received client feedback. It was nice to finally be able to do some work in a real world context rather than solely for a class assignment.
P.S.--Jeremy is still looking for another intern if anyone is interested...

I had the wonderful beginnings of an internship getting going starting this past summer semester while doing a project for ad design for the MSPCA. Right before classes started this semester I found out the person I was dealing with left the MSPCA and didn't talk with her boss about me doing an internship with them so that completely fell through...ugh! Needless to say I'm still without an internship, but with the help of Amanda I have finished my resume to the point of being able to send it out. I know there's still a little bit of work to do with it, but so far it's good as is. I'm hoping to hear from The Phoenix within the next couple of days for an interview. There's an obvious time-crunch, so I'll most likely send my resume to other places as well. It's just a mini waiting game for now...but I definitely will be calling The Phoenix Wednesday or Thursday to follow up - thanks for that piece of advice guys!

I am still in the market for an internship, hoping to get in at the Phoenix. I am yet to really look into the AAF website, but will most likely be digging around there in the near future on the advise of classmates.

The CD portfolio is an absolutely great idea! I didn't even think about that until I read your comment.
I have a question for anyone who has been through the interview process and has gotten an internship:
Is it better to have a CD of your portfolio than bringing in a portfolio book, or should I bring both?
I also have some of my earlier work on my website (www.sasdezignz.com) but haven't had a chance to update it lately. Is that something I should be sending with my resume, or should I wait to show it at the interview? I would absolutely love any other suggestions y'all might have for me!
Wish me luck!

My experiences finding an internship have been surprisingly good. Applying early along with my frequent visits to the Career Services office helped me get two offers in which I chose Arnold. I am definitly nervous about starting the internship this week, but I'm sure it will pass. As for future students, I recommend applying early for an internship. The sooner, the better. I feel less stress because I prepared ahead of time.

I ended up getting my internship over the summer. I guess the best advice would be to start looking early. I made sure I had my resume, cover letter and sample work in PDF form ready when applying.

I think that the AAF.org site is a great tool. Sarah always has the best website references! Rock on!

My best advice to you Nikki is to apply to as many as possible. Apply to internships you know you'll get (kind of as a safety) and apply to those you feel you may not get.

This is response to pmartin. Follow up is key. It definitely shows your commitment and how interested you are. My advice would be to give them another call in a week or so.

I finally got one at The Phoenix! I went in prepared, with a printed, ring-bound catalog of my favorite pieces of work and those I found most relevant to the field (about 10). Which I left, along with a CD portfolio for my interviewer to keep. I agree that it is imperative to leave them with something physical. This helps you stick in the interviewer's mind, as well as makes it easy for them to find your contact information (I printed mine on the CD sleeve).

p.s. I'm pretty psyched.

ashley.stmary said...

I finally got an internship at The Phoenix, too! I am extremely relieved for this. I start next Monday, and have to say the best advice I got was to come prepared and with a CD portfolio to leave with the interviewer.

I went for a second interview at Amalgam Digital on wednesday. It was basically to tell me that I got the internship, I am really excited. I will be making web banners for their site, promotional flyers for hip hop and rap artists, and possibly cd covers. When I went for both interviews he was really interested that I was also a photographer. I am really glad I decided to bring in some examples of my work.
