How are you preparing for this semester?

Comment on how you are preparing and going to manage your time this semester. Any advice that has helped with time management in the past you can share? What do you anticipate your biggest challenge to be and how will you handle that challenge?

I have a tight schedule during the week. I have blocked out time for each class twice a week. I know things might change as I get into the classes more and see what the work load is but this always helps me. I think that my big challenge is going to be the redesign of my website. Not sure yet how I will tackle it but I really want to get it done before the portfolio show. I might work it into my PMP so that is really happens.

I am going to try to take full advantage of having control over what is due when on my PMP to make the semester less crazy. Ideally I would like to be able to schedule the due dates of projects that I need to rework or re-do on the weeks that I do not have anything due in Advertising or Internship Seminar. That way on the dates that there are major projects due in other classes I will have a portfolio piece that only requires minimal rework...hopefully cutting down on the stress of it all. I also invested in a printer than can print 11x17 so I can produce some of the pieces myself without wasting time and money at other "printing establishments." (I'm sure I don't need to name names for you to get my drift...)
On that note, does anyone have any suggestions where to get 11x17 paper (similar to what they use @ MIS or Staples)? I can only seem to find photo paper or cardstock, but I need something to print a multipage document. -Thanks

Kelly, that is a great idea and I didn't even consider overlapping deadlines. I have already cut down on my work schedule at my job, so that should free up a lot of time for the internship- I am not sure how much time each week will have to be devoted to that, but I can see the scheduling getting pretty tight. Looking forward to this crazy semester nonetheless.

So by preperations do you just mean last minute procrastination again? cuz lord knows its one of the best ways to get work done... you feel the pull of the increasingly close deadline, and somehow, someway, things always get done, projects always get finished, meals get skipped, music gets played, friends are shut out, but in the morning after your 2 and a half hour sleep that bright light in the sky seems to be that much brighter!

Kelly,
There is a pretty good paper store in Quincy, on Furnace Brook Parkway, ...although I'm not sure of the name. I don't know how far away you live from school but it's about a 15 minute ride from campus, (ideally).

As far as preparing for the semester....I have a very detailed daily planner with every due date already written for the entire semester. This way I know exactly what is coinciding with everything else and I can get a very good idea as to when times will be tight and sleep will be scarce. My biggest challenge is finding the time each week with 5 classes, an internship and work- to redo work for my portfolio.....

the paper store you are referring to is XPedx (I think that is how you spell it). we will talk about it this semester. Great resource for resume paper and envelopes etc.

The PMP is something I've been attempting to do all through my college career. It is very nice being able to foresee the work ahead because I know that as long as I stick with my plan, the work can't pile up and overwhelm me. My main priority this semester is to think positive and stay calm.

Sarah, I agree with your comment about the website. I haven't put it in the PMP for the class, but I made a separate one just for my website that includes deadlines in terms of how many aspects of the site I want to have done by the end of each week. It's working so far because the work is coming in such small increments so it's very easy to handle.

For the first time in my entire school career I am now writing things down in a daily planner. Trying to balance work, internship, school, and happiness is going to be so difficult for me, but thus far the daily planner has kept my mind at ease and in perfect order.

I think the PMP chart will help keep me on track. I haven’t thought about my preparation for the semester as a whole, I am concentrating on one week at a time. Certain projects will not need an entire week to finalize, so I will be over lapping projects in order to stay on top of the workload.

I make detailed daily/weekly lists of ‘things to do’- it helps keep my mind organized.

Sarah- I think adding the website into your PMP chart is a fabulous idea. I am adding it to the list now..

What has helped me time manage the most is waking up almost every day at the exact same time. whether it's for school or work, having to be up at 6:45 in the morning really makes the day last and let's me block out certain hours for homework.

the best time management advice i can give is to block out at least one entire day for homework. I always surprise myself at how much work i get done in 8 hours, and usually i don't want to stop because i enjoy the time to myself and my work.

my biggest challenge for the semester is going to be building my website. i plan to do plenty of research of other portfolio websites and build on good design and content. along with putting time aside for my projects, my website gets its own time slot as well so hopefully it will work out in the end.

Go big or go home. That is my motto for this last semester, all four years of college are coming to an end and this is a great way to go out guns blazing. I have made an effort through the acquisition of a planner, and through careful note taking to stay ahead of the blizzard of work barreling its way towards me. I think it is extremely important to stay busy throughout the day and understand what you can complete and what you need to put aside. Its all about balance.

I have always had a hard time managing school work along with the rest of my life. As far as project go, I usually end up with having to do the bulk of the piece at last minute. I also have a hard time realizing how much time it would take to finish a project, so I end up finishing it very last minute. Anyway, thanks to the advice of others, I have thought carefully about my PMP, and have invested in a little planner/organizer so that I can keep myself a little bit more managed. Having to do the portfolio along with my internship is a lot of work in itself. Add that to my other job (and a boyfriend) means a really busy next three months. I'm just focusing on not completely stressing and freaking out, considering that usually ends up in a mess of migraines. I guess I'll just have to take it from day to day.

In response to Kelly, I wish I could invest in a nice 11x17 printer for myself. That would definitely make my life easier. I've ended up managing my schedule in a way so that I have time to print, with time afterwards in case I have to fix the piece and re-print. If anyone has suggestions on good, yet quick printers, please let me know.

How im preparing for the semester is pacing myself there is alot going on all at once and i think the most importaint thing to do is not panic. So im trying not to do that. Just making time to get my projects done and have sometime for myself. the only concern I have is my publication class how that work load is going to be and how to balance it with work and internship and my other classes.
